Over the last 25 years there has been more talk and research on bone health and the need for calcium. But bone health and bone integrity is more than taking 1000 milligrams of calcium each day… much more! Healthy bone is a complex mix of various vitamins and minerals and cofactors that give bone its strength. Besides calcium, our bones require nutrients such as vitamin D, phosphorous, sodium, manganese, magnesium, and vitamin K to name just a few. Additionally, a healthy lifestyle and exercise are essential.
Bone health depends on a complex give-and-take process called remodeling. Specialized bone cells called osteoclasts go through bone tissue retrieving old bone and leave small, jagged spaces behind. This triggers other specialized cells called osteoblasts to come in and fill these spaces with new bone. About five to ten percent of all our bone tissue is replaced in a year in this way. For these specialized cells to perform their job, a balance of the right nutrients are needed.
