My oldest patient in practice lived to just a day before her 103rd birthday. She was an amazing woman: still read the Wall Street Journal, as a great conversationalist, was very joyful, and full of life. She attributed many things to her long and vibrant life including her vitamins. She was diligent in taking the multi-vitamins, omega-3s, vitamin D and trace minerals every day that I recommended to her. “They keep me going Dr. G!” she would say.
You see, she got it! She knew that even though she ate pretty well, she did not eat everything her body needed to thrive. So, she bridged the gap of what was missing by taking supplements every day. Now, this is not to say you will live to a thriving 103 simply by taking the right supplements! But the benefits far outweigh the costs. What are you doing to bridge the gap of what is missing from your diet? Are you eating cruciferous vegetables every day? How about healthy fats such as omega-3s? An apple a day? We hear these things all the time, but are you really practicing these health building activities? If not, when are you planning to start? Remember what is said: the best time to plant a tree was yesterday. Start now!
